2. What is a Cookie?

Today, cookies are used by almost all websites and are in many cases necessary to provide services on the website.

A cookie is a small text file stored on the user’s IT equipment (such as a PC, tablet, smartphone, etc.) allowing the website to recognise the equipment. Cookies may, for instance, be used for the purpose of preparing statistics of the users’ website use and improving the website’s content. A cookie is a passive file, which means it cannot collect information from your computer or spread computer virus or other malware. Some cookies are placed by websites other than the one currently visited by you (so-called third party cookies). The cookies may be of a general nature, but they may also hold analytical tools or embedded comment fields. This means that cookies from parties other than the one owning the website are stored on your IT equipment.

Some cookies are created temporarily and expire at the end of the user session when the browser is closed (session cookies). Other cookies are stored on the user’s IT equipment for a longer period of time (persistent cookies). When the user revisits a website, new session cookies will be placed in the temporary memory, whereas a persistent cookie will be renewed.

3. The Website’s use of Cookies

We use first party cookies on Covidence.com to generate statistical information about website use and to enhance and simplify your visit. The cookies are persistent and are stored for respectively 2 years and up to 1 year from your last visit.

4. How to Reject or Delete Your Cookies

4.1 Rejection of Cookies

You can always reject cookies on your computer by changing the settings in your browser. Where these settings are found depends on which browser you use. You must, however, be aware that if you do this, there will be many features and services which you may no longer use as they are subject to the website remembering the choices you make.

4.2 Deletion of Cookies

Cookies which you have previously accepted may easily be deleted. If you use a PC with a newer browser you may delete your cookies by using the shortcut keys: [CTRL] + [SHIFT] + [Delete]. If the shortcut keys do not work and/or you are using a MAC you need to start by finding out which browser you use and then click the relevant link. Remember: If you use more than one browser, you need to delete the cookies in all of them.
